An Amalien Haus team evening...

Posted: Thursday 11th February 2010 by amalien

Yesterday evening was the staff night off at the Amalien Haus in St Anton, and a team evening Tobogganing was in order to celebrate the half way point of the season. The evening started by collecting our Rodel’s (toboggans!) from the bottom of the Nassereinbahn before enjoying a quick drink in “Fang bar” surrounded by outdoor heaters, moonlit pistes and the chatter of nervous Rodelers. This was shortly followed by a ride up in the Gondola in the dark – an eerie experience as the Gondola floats its way over the dark forests in the still of the night.

Once at the top, a short practise from the top of the Gondola to the Gampen Bar was in order before some warming Gluhwein to quash anxious minds, whilst listening to the live local Austrian music. The trip had been put off enough and it was time for the team to start their excursion down the Rodel Track, not before a short safety talk by Kevin, St Anton’s resident Resort Manager and Tom, St Anton’s resident Ski Event Manager, though! The track is narrow and full of hairpin bends and blind corners. Tom shot into the lead, but was over taken by Kev who took the trophy for the first half of the race. The team were inevitably covered in snow from head to toe and a refuel was needed in the Rodel Hut.

Gathered around the open fire, warming mind (and body!) the team enjoyed gigantic knuckles of pork slowly roasted for 4 hours leaving the most tender ham you have ever eaten and the most spectacular crackling to go with it. A few schnapps’ and gluhweins later, the team were corralled into returning to the track for the final third of the journey. The race was close, and Frankie may have taken the trophy if it wasn’t for Tom and his dirty tactics! Needless to say, Kevin won, again, but then again he has been once or twice…

A final drink at the bottom of the run and a few rounds of the traditional Austrian “Nail Game” (you’ll have to come visit to see this one…) and the whole lot of us were ready for bed…

Another entertaining day in St Anton, and with the Salter Party due to arrive tomorrow, the fun and games will only continue, we hope you can join us soon.
