A South African New Year in St Anton

Posted: Wednesday 18th January 2012 by amalien

The South African Polkinhorne party were with us at the Amalien Haus over the New Year with their friends staying all over St Anton and Lech. The Youth Winter Olympics torch reached St Anton on their first evening which was celebrated with a street party and fireworks.

Dinner was held early so the families were able to watch the First Ski Snow show held on the 30th December, celebrating the start of the weekly event happening every Wednesday from now on. The event showcases the talents of St Anton Ski Schools instructors. It was a fantastic display from the team, a finale of fireworks and a torch lit decent summed up a great evening.

St Anton goes mad for New Year’s Eve celebrations! To begin our guests had dinner and a couple of drinks in town. The Hotel Post blasted music into the street where lots of people were gathering. There were even more fireworks, plenty of dancing and the beginning of 2012 was celebrated in style with the party continuing into the early morning.

On the days that followed, Ski Event Manager Emma G took 8 of the group for a ski orientation to Stuben where they stopped for lunch in the Berg Haus Stuben to sample Rosti, a delicious Austrian dish. Skiing conditions were very snowy but a very persistent and happy group had a fantastic day!

On the Tuesday, we woke up to bright blue skies shining over the fresh snowfall and the group made the most of these fantastic conditions with a ski orientation to nearby Lech. Emma G and Kev took a 23 strong group around the Wiese Ring (White Ring); a scenic route which takes you full circle from Zurs through Zug, Lech and Oberlech. It was certainly a challenge keeping the group together, especially when the curious children decided to explore the powder through the trees! Meanwhile Emma T took a smaller group to Lech where they had a cheeky stop at the famous Frozen Ice Bar.

We all met up for lunch at the Hotel Salome in Oberlech and enjoyed the stunning view. It was an amazing day thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Each evening brought an awards ceremony which enlightened us about the group’s antics during the day and there was certainly never a dull moment throughout their new year’s ski trip! The Richardson’s enjoyed their stay so much they opted to extend their visit with a 3 night stay in a Lech hotel.

Also with us over the New Year were the Hills, welcome return guests of Flexiski! They embraced all that St Anton had to offer with the occasional extended après parties and some great skiing, they were a great addition to our South African party. We will certainly miss them and hope to see them next year with the children!

The snow has been fantastic, with over 4 meters of fresh snow recorded on top of the Galzig, waste deep powder is everywhere. Each day is getting better and better. We can’t wait to see what next week brings.
