Our ten favourite places in St Anton
Posted: Wednesday 28th March 2012 by amalien
With just a couple of weeks remaining, we’ve had a look back at our favourite St Anton hotspots from this season. And in no particular order we have…
Hotel Raffl’s St. Antonerhof
Towards the more sophisticated end of the apres-ski, the Hotel Raffl’s has a huge warming log fire, great for enjoying a glass of wine on the sofa, served by friendly barmen Max and Bernt. Having said this, the bar has lively nights too with live music and dancing encouraged – we of course are only too happy to oblige. The hotel also has a fantastic restaurant, an ideal choice for a special meal.
The Wellness Centre
Ski Event Managers the Emma’s can often be found swimming lengths in the large outside pool or sat in the steaming hot whirlpool both of which enjoy spectacular mountain views. The centre has a wealth of facilities including spas, saunas, steam and massage rooms, as well as a gym, tennis court and an ice rink for those feeling a little more active. The highlight for the flexiski team is definitely the evening curling sessions on the ice rink – training for Sochi 2014 possibly?
The Underground on the Piste
The building and atmosphere of this place are very similar to its eccentric owner, Joan. This magical place has the perfect combination of apres, a quiet beer and a meal out. There is live music every evening, with varying musicians, no two nights here will ever be the same. The restaurant serves fantastic food and especially recommended is the almond coated baked Camembert. This rustic chalet is perfect for a chilled evening and a great place for all ages.
Bar Cuba
In the centre of the main street, Bar Cuba is home to reasonably priced drinks and live music by Andy Gibbs from 4. For the late night partiers Cuba is open until 2am. The bar has plenty of entertainment with wide screen televisions showing major sporting events, as well as a pool table and table football. ‘Shut the Box’ a game of luck is popular and ends in Jager for all, you just have to hope you’re not the one buying!
Piccadilly, Post Keller
A favourite of guests and staff alike, the Piccadilly bar has a lively reputation with live music enjoyed by everyone. After hours, under the same roof, the Post Keller is the late night venue in St Anton, with the party continuing and dance floor buzzing until 3.30am.
Krazy Kanguruh
Owned by local hero, Austrian slalom racer Mario Matt and run mostly by Andrea, they work hard to provide an apres-ski venue which is hard to beat. Fancy dress is not just accepted, but encouraged. From various animals to a group of 20 Elvis’s the fancy dress becomes more and more flamboyant each year. Even the staff can be seen skiing down the slopes in the kangaroo gear. The Krazy Kanguruh also makes a great lunch stop with portions to fuel a heavy afternoon’s skiing…if you can resist the temptation to make an early start on the apres!
Scotty’s
Scotty’s has a very comfortable feel, with a more laid back atmosphere than some of the bars. Having said this, the parties that they organise can be amongst the liveliest. These include a Full Moon Thailand Party, Beach Party, Geek night and a raffle evening. We can certainly recommend the Long Island Ice Tea.
The Beach
The Beach is located at the top of Rendl gondola and rather fittingly, is the top choice for a sunny day. Deck chairs and wicker seating on the balcony overlook a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. The seating is also a great vista to watch those who left their fear back in the village, testing out the newly improved snow park…some more successfully than others. Last weekend, the Amalien Haus team were there watching the Kirschbaum battle, a showcase of professional and local freestyle skills with skiing on the Saturday and boarders on the Sunday. We were of course cheering for our British riders!
Jennewein Pure Sports
For top class equipment and great advice, Jennewein is definitely the place to go. Run by our favourite crew of Austrians, each is very knowledgeable and makes a routine visit to the ski shop more of an experience. They include Gogo the Manager who now only ever skis at night with a head torch…why..? Who knows, ask him!
The Mooserwirt
Last but certainly not least, the Mooserwirt is a world famous Austrian apres-ski bar located just underneath the Galzig Gondola. The food is certainly worth mentioning in particular and unique to the Mooserwirt, is the large ostrich egg which you can share between your friends. DJ Gerhard has been there for the last 20 years dropping The Final Count Down at 3.30pm. Once everyone hears those opening chords, anything goes! Table dancing is encouraged whilst the waiters somehow manage to carry trays full of 30 steins of Weis beer and Jager bombs stacked on top without spilling a drop. And here’s a little fact for you, the Mooserwirt sells more beer here per sq foot than anywhere else in the Alps!
So these are our favourite hangouts in St Anton. Do you agree? We’re certainly going to miss these places over the summer but we’ll be back to enjoy them all over again next winter!
