White out conditions in St Anton...
Posted: Monday 8th March 2010 by amalien
This week the Amalien Haus has been a hive of activity as both the Henderson and Cutler parties joined us for a weekend reunion of high spirited fun reminiscing with old friends. Yesterday, the Henderson party opted for an additional days Ski Event Management with me, St Anton’s resident Ski Event Manager. St Anton has been blessed with persistent snow fall since Wednesday, and yesterday was no exception with white out conditions and over a foot at the mid-stations of Galzig and Gampen. Mick left me to decide the best options for the day, and as such the group started their morning on the newly built Rendlbahn gondola with heated seats and fantastic views.
The group made the most of the tree lined runs to optimise the visibility in the poor conditions. After a few runs on the cruisy rotund blues, that roll around the Rendl mountains, a coffee stop was well over due and a quick (half hour) break for brandy or hot chocolate, it was time for another few runs back down towards St Anton. We took the R1 red run before a short hop up to Gampen on the 6 main chairlift, before shooting down to the Rodel Hut just above Nasserien. At the restaurant I had reserved a large table right by the fire. Gloves, and hats were laid around the fire to dry whilst sipping a Gluhwein (or two!) . The -15 degree conditions had left the group with unrivalled hunger, and the best option was the roasted knuckle of pork that had gone in the cast iron oven at the Rodel Hut just 6 hours earlier. The only thing needed to complete the perfect lunch was a few bottles of 4 year vintage Pinot Noir from the valleys below us.
2 hours later, a single run across the valley was all that was required (or could be managed!) before arriving at the “Undergroud on the Piste” next to the Galzig bahn for some light après ski with live music and jovial banter from the days falls, in the perfect fresh snow.
Unfortunately the Henderson’s and Cutler’s have now left us, but hopefully not without a few memories that they will treasure forever.
