Think of Christmas, then add some snow and you have the prettiest ski resort in France. Megeve is perhaps one of the most picturesque, unspoilt resorts, set in a stunning valley location with views towards Mont Blanc. Megève attracts a discerning clientele, when everyone else was heading to the Three Valleys the French were heading to Megeve, steeped in history this is one of the most classy, upmarket resorts in France.

The Megève ski area is relatively small in comparison to many of the other French resorts but what it does offer is a completely unique skiing experience based around 3 distinct areas -Rochebrune, Le Jaillet and La Giettaz. You'll also benefit from the ski pass that covers a number of different areas around Megeve so for keen skiers that want to head to this resort their is plenty of terrain to explore including Saint-Gervais, Saint-Nicholas de Veroce, Combloux, Les Contamines and Praz.

beginners and intermediates

The main nursery slope in Megeve is at the Mont d'Arbois, this is an excellent area for beginnners easily accessible by both cable car and ski bus there are plenty of wide and gentle green runs to start on. The area of Mont d'Arbois is also good place for beginners to progress to more intermediate levels of skiing, across the valley floor are the Rochebrune slopes with some longer green runs and easy blues to improve your technique. Intermediates will be in heaven with a wide choice of tree-lined blue and red runs to cruise.

advanced and off piste

The best snow can be found on Mont d’Arbois where advanced skiers will be rewarded with stunning views, steep slopes and opportunities for off-piste. However the area best known for advanced skiers are the Mont Joly and the Mont Joux, here the slopes are particularly steep back down to the resort and the most famous black run is the Chamois. L'Epaule is equally good for advanced skiers but also has the opportunity for off piste itineraries. The area of Christomet also has a good selection of red and black runs as well as being one of the best challenging areas for off piste skiers to work on their technique. Advanced and off piste skiers may also wish to explore further afield and ski in the resorts of Chamonix, Courmayeur and Les Contamines.

apres ski

Parts of this pretty resorts centre date back to medieval times and the attractive cobbled streets are home to many upmarket shops, bars and restaurants. Megeve is actually home to seven bars most of which are open from around 4pm until the early hours of the morning, the bars tend to be quaint and understated but offer just the right amount of atmosphere. The restaurants also offer an ambiance of warmth and with outstanding service and exceptional quality cuisine you really can't go wrong wherever you decide to.

The main square hosts a weekly market and is the departure point for horse-drawn sleigh rides. You can also try your hand at dog sledding, hot air ballooning and paragliding.
