Val Thorens Snow Report

Val Thorens, the highest resort in the Three Valleys and in Europe, offers excellent snow and endless skiing. This unique village is set at the top of the Belleville valley with great links to the rest of the Three Valleys and the relatively unknown fourth valley. Traditional in style the resort has a warm yet relaxed cosmopolitan atmosphere, popular due to it's high altitude and access to the Trois Vallees system, Val Thorens is an excellent choice for your ski break.

beginners and intermediates
Val Thorens offers doorstep skiing from many of the hotels, making it a much sought after resort. There are a selection of slopes that are great for all abilities as well. Val Thorens is one of the best resorts for beginners, even on the nursey slopes you are guaranteed snow as this is the highest resort in the Trois Vallees at 2,300m above sea level. As your skiing ability progresses there are some easy blue runs to progress to higher up the slopes as well as the Roc circuit. Intermediates are particularly well catered for in the Belleville Valley with access via blue and red runs to the resorts of Les Menuires and Saint Martin that are connected to Val Thorens by a number of routes, dependent on whether your looking to ski long blue runs or or challenging reds.

advanced and off piste
For advanced skiers looking to stay in resort there is a limited amount of challeging black runs but head to the Breche De Rosael and the Cime De Caron for the best in the area. We actually advise taking the Trois Vallees ski pass and making the most of the entire ski area.

You don't actually need to go to either Courchevel or Meribel if you're an expert skier or enjoy off piste as the area surrounding Val Thorens has the most off piste available in the entire ski area. The fourth valley and especially the areas of Orelle and la Masse are relatively unknown and yet offer some of the best steep descents, best powder and most advanced rocky terrain. Here you'll actually feel as though you have conquered a mountain with glorious views of the surrounding summits, there are also a number of glacier descents to choose from including the glacier du Bouchet and the glacier de Gebroulaz.

apres ski
Val Thorens is quite a spread out resort so there isn't any one area that is great for apres ski, you'll find a few busy bars but it really depends when you head out. Val Thorens has a more relaxed feel so the bars and pubs tend to get busier later around 10 or 11pm and then you'll find two or three clubs including a Dicks T-bar that stay open until 4am.

The majority of people who have spent the day skiing tend to stop in a mountain spot on the way back to their hotel for a couple of apres ski drinks. Dinner again is quite a relaxed occassion, most of the hotels provide superb restaurants and then you'll also find a selection of restaurants in and around the resort including pizzerias, traditional french restaurants serving fondue and a two Michelin starred restaurant 'Oxlays'.
