the resort
Sophisticated and cultured, Madonna di Campiglio is one of the most eminent ski resorts in Italy. Based in the stunning Rendena Valley, deep in the heart of the Dolomites, one cannot fail to be in awe of the incredible natural scenery of this area. Visitors are welcomed with the superb hospitality, typical of the country. The town centre offers world class shopping and radiates an air of elegance and style that is quintessentially Italian.
Madonna di Campiglio sits at 1550m, rising to more than 2600m at the highest point, is snow reliable and offers the possibility of skiing back into town for the majority of the season. Madonna di Campiglio is linked with the ski areas of Folgarida and Marilleva, and offers over 150km of exquisitely prepared piste, which caters well for every level of skier. The efficient and modern lift system ensures skiers are treated to varied runs with open mountain at the top before diving in to the belt of evergreens towards the bottom.
beginners and intermediates
Beginner skiers can enjoy the gentle nursery slopes of Campo Carlo Magno, a short distance from the main slopes just outside the Golf Hotel and perfect for learning. Having grasped the basics, one of the advantages of Madonna di Campiglio for beginners is that the easier slopes are not only located at the bottom of the mountain. It is possible to get plenty of kilometres under the skis high up in the peaks as well as on long, cruisy blues that run the length of the valley.
Madonna di Campiglio is absolutely perfect for intermediate skiers, with the main point of embarkation being the Monte Spinale gondola from the town centre. There is a great sense of freedom as you move effortlessly from one end of the ski area to the other along beautifully prepared, tree lined runs. Passo Groste is of particular note with incredible views. A real confidence booster is the Schumacher Streif, named after the famous F1 driver who frequents the resort. This is a very short (but very steep) section of piste which can be quite challenging at first, but is a truly exhilarating experience.
advanced and off piste
Although not well known for advanced skiing, Madonna di Campiglio can cater for skiers of this level. For experts, the main challenges include the Canal Miramonti run, which begins at the top of Monte Spinale and the famous 3 Tre run which is used for the annual World Cup race. Skiers looking for adventurous off-piste can head to the area of Cima Brenta.
après ski
Evenings typically begin with a stroll through the Madonna di Campiglio centre, perhaps indulging in a spot of people watching from the Majestic Hotel Piano Bar in the heart of the town as the more wealthy Italian clientele begin to appear in their best fur coats for their daily passeggiata.
The resort’s reputation for excellent après ski is well deserved, with skiers generally heading for the bars in town straight from the mountain to enjoy happy hour. Cantina Suisse in the centre of town is popular for cocktails until 7 o’clock, or head downstairs to Franz Josef’s Stube for a great ambience and friendly bar staff, whilst the Cliffhanger offers a livelier atmosphere, as does the Ferrari Lounge.
resort activites
Cross country skiing, dog sledding, ice climbing, ice skating, paragliding, ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, snow excursions, telemark skiing and swimming.
