the resort
Spectacularly situated at the foot of the Matterhorn, the charming ski resort of Zermatt has everything to offer in the way of fantastic skiing, picturesque surroundings and a dynamic après ski scene. The resort sits at 1620m but with the Matterhorn Glacier reaching 3883m, Zermatt is the highest resort in the Alps and boasts an expansive ski area which spreads to include the Italian resort of Cervinia. Zermatt has gained a reputation of being a world-class resort attracting visitors from around the world, thanks to its wonderful skiing, iconic scenery and the traditional chocolate box village with a wealth of lively bars, luxury boutiques and gourmet restaurants.
beginners and Intermediates
Beginners should not be put off by Zermatt’s reputation as an advanced resort. The vast ski area ensures an excellent range of mixed-ability skiing with plenty of easier runs to be found. There are now four designated ‘beginner zones’ within Zermatt, meaning whatever your location on the mountain, easy access can be had to nursery slopes and gentle runs. The biggest of these facilities can be found at the top of the Sunnegga lift. The resort however is more suited to intermediates and is particularly ideal for the more adventurous, with mile after mile of beautiful red runs.
advanced and off-piste
A ski break to Zermatt is a great option for advanced skiers. Across 310km of piste there is a wide selection of lengthy reds and challenging black runs. There is also great off-piste when the conditions are right, as well as a number of thrilling mogul fields. The more adventurous can try Heli-skiing from the 4250m peak of Monte Rosa.
apres-ski
The après ski in Zermatt is varied and offers both an informal yet sophisticated atmosphere. You will find that there is something to suit all tastes; from the bustling night-spot of the Post Hotel with its 4 restaurants and 5 bars and clubs to the more gourmet dining experience at the Corbeau d’Or in the Mirabeau Hotel. As well as fantastic dining options within the village, mountain restaurants in Zermatt are argued to be some of the best in the world, serving delicious, traditional food against a spectacular back-drop. And for those looking for a bit of retail therapy, the pedestrianised town centre is lined with luxury clothing stores and specialist Swiss boutiques.
