New Year Ski Holidays For 2020

Take a look at our advice on how to source the best new year holidays around.

Being in the mountains and skiing on New Year's Day is a pretty decent way to kick off the new year. Fireworks with a snowy mountain backdrop followed by a cooked breakfast and a day on the slopes is pretty much the perfect combination. Far better than being at home, and waking up to the harsh reality that the 4am game of pie face in the lounge is not going to clear itself up. This is New year's Eve done properly, with plenty of alpine atmosphere.

At flexiski, we think a short ski break over the New Year period is perfect timing. Sunday to Wednesday ski breaks work perfectly for 2020/2021, with New Years Eve falling on a Tuesday this year. It even means you'll only have to take two days off work. This way, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the Christmas period at home before flying out to the mountains on the 29th for a few days of snow, skiing and good times. Our tailor-made trips are completely flexible. Between our chalets, hotels, and apartments, we're confident we can create the perfect new year ski holiday for you.

With that in mind, below we'll look at some of the big questions surrounding skiing over the New Year period and what your short new year ski holiday may look like.

Can I ski on New Year's Day?

Of course! This is the best thing about new year ski holidays. We love chowing down on a delicious breakfast before hitting the slopes on New Year's Day. Having a ski day as the first day of the year helps you start as you mean to go on. How could it be a bad year when you start it on the slopes?

If you do manage to get up early - especially in the party towns such as St Anton or Val Thorens - then you may have some of the quietest pistes all year. Make the most of the mountains while most of your fellow skiers are still in bed nursing a killer hangover.

Will there be snow for the new year?

The question on everyone's lips. You're heading to the mountain, so naturally you want snow. You will always be able to ski over the New Year. It would take a very severe year indeed to see poor snow conditions on the 1st January.

Of course it's not guaranteed, but if you're worried about it (based on last year there's zero worry required) then you can always head north to Norway where the season starts in November. Alternatively, heading high up to the likes of the Three Valleys in France of the Arlberg in Austria is a very safe bet. However, in all honesty, the vast majority of resorts should be snowy by New Year's Eve.

Will there be a decent party on New Year's Eve?

Towns will be packed full of festive cheer, 30-foot Christmas trees, joyfully illuminated streets, and fireworks overhead. The bars will be buzzing and the mountains on your doorstep. We reckon this makes a recipe for a decent party that outplays anything Mary Berry might bake up.

Will there be a decent party on New Year's Eve? You bet there will be. If you can find a resort without one we'll be impressed.

What does skiing over the New Year period look like in resort?

Below are a couple of itineraries detailing what you can expect when skiing over the New Year period. Chalets and hotels offer very different experiences and the resort you choose will play a big part in how you spend your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Here we look at heading to a chalet in Meribel versus heading across the pond to experience the natural beauty of Banff in Canada. Two wildly different experiences, both equally as amazing.

Meribel

3pm: Time for some New Year's Eve après ski. After your day's skiing, head to the Rond Point for the best après up on the slopes.

7pm: Time to catch a bus back to the chalet for canapés with fizz before your last dinner of 2020.

12am: Watch the post-dinner fireworks over Meribel and head down into town to mingle with the buzzing party atmosphere.

9am: Wake up to a freshly prepared breakfast beside the roaring fire. Your ski boots are warming on the racks in wait.

10am: After a few restorative bacon sarnies, it's time to let the mountain air clear your head's remaining cobwebs with a day on the slopes.

Banff

3pm: Husky sledding through the wilds of Banff National Park is something to tick off the bucket list.

6pm: Post sledding, stop off at the Park Distillery for their early, child-friendly dinner sitting. Here, you'll be able to enjoy a special campfire-inspired New Year's Eve menu.

10pm: Head to the square in downtown Banff for hot chocolate stalls, fire pits, and entertainment. This is a fantastic place to watch the fireworks or take in the torch lit descent snaking its way down Mt. Norquay.

9am: Wake up to stunning mountain views before heading to Tooloulou's for their deliciously decadent breakfast menu including children's options. Try the Cajun cheese omelette for something special.

11am: Grab your skis and hop on the bus to Sunshine Village for a day of stunning views from the ski slopes. Sunshine Mountain Lodge is definitely worth a night or two if you have the time.

If you need a little help deciding where's best for you, give our ski specialists a call on 01962 587777 and they can find the perfect new year ski holidays for you.
