Bad Gastein Ski Breaks - Overview

Bad Gastein is a charming Austrian resort, built into the rock with Belle Epoque buildings sweeping across the steep flanks of the Gastein Valley gorge, as well as a dramatic waterfall that roars through the village.

Famed for the healing properties of the local waters, Bad Gastein is is not your typical Austrian ski resort. It is home to one of the world's best thermal spas, where you can sit in the warm outdoor pools and take in the magnificent views - the perfect way to recuperate after a full day on the slopes.

The resort offers a good range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as on and off-slope attractions for skiers, snowboarders and non-skiers alike.

Located 100km directly South of Salzburg, Bad Gastein can be reached in 1hr 30 minutes, so perfect for a short break or long weekend in Austria. All three Gastein Valley resorts are also linked by train, which also presents a viable alternative for reaching other resorts including Zell am See.

Skiing In Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein and the Gastein valley offers diverse skiing across five scenic ski areas with wide, well-groomed pistes, super-quick modern lifts and rarely a queue in sight.

The main Stubnerkogel ski area is located at the top of the gorge, and the gondola from the resort whisks you up to 2,251m, where you can then access the entire ski area.

Steady skiers and snowboarders can cruise west on a series of great red and blue runs, including the longest piste in the Central Eastern Alps (an impressive 11km long!) and then take the gondola back up from Bad Hofgastein.

Intermediates and advanced skiers should head to the Sportgastein...high altitude, adrenaline junkie skiing a plenty!

The views in the area are spectacular and one of the must-see attractions is the 140m long Stubnerkogel suspension bridge which promises spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.  From there a path leads to the Glocknerblick viewing platform which has magical views of Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner (elev. 3,798m).  Off the slopes there's a wealth of activities in Gastein with ice skating, sleigh rides, curling and ziplining.

Apres Ski In Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is a great place for lively Austrian après-ski. Being at the end of the valley, it's a town that likes to party!

The Silver Bullet has a wild west style theme, with top quality live music and a fantastic atmosphere - expect a lot of dancing! Haeggbloms Bar also has live music most nights and even though it's only a small place the bands and staff are very lively!
