Skiing near Salzburg
Although Salzburg is Austria's second largest international airport, it's still not a massive place and getting through customs is normally a breeze.
That being said, flights do tend to be in the mornings so whilst this is great to ski on your arrival day it means if you want to ski on your departure day then you'd be better off taking the longer transfer to Munich for your return flight.

Part of the Ski Amadé region, Hochkönig offers access to 120km of pistes spread across the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten, and Mühlbach. The terrain is well connected, with wide, scenic slopes and impressive views of the Hochkönig massif. It’s a great area for cruising, with mostly blue and red runs, making it ideal for beginners and intermediates, though there are a few more challenging descents for confident skiers too.
There’s also a snow park – the Kings Park in Mühlbach – one of the longest in Austria, with lines for all abilities, from freestyle newbies to seasoned park riders.
Families are well catered for with excellent ski schools and relaxed village vibes, while the peaceful, uncrowded slopes appeal to anyone looking to escape the party scene.
Flachau - 1 hour from Salzburg Airport
Flachau sits at the heart of the vast Ski Amadé network and is part of the Snow Space Salzburg area, offering 210km of linked pistes across Flachau, Wagrain, and St. Johann. The terrain is mostly wide, well-groomed red and blue runs, perfect for intermediates looking to cruise – but there’s enough variety to keep beginners and more confident skiers happy too.
There’s a snow park in nearby Absolut Park (accessible via shuttle), one of Europe’s largest freestyle parks, with features for all levels and a strong reputation among freestyle skiers and boarders.
Flachau is lively without being over the top – think sociable après-ski, good bars, and a laid-back Austrian vibe. It’s also well-equipped for families, with quality ski schools and beginner zones.
Obertauern - 1 hour 10 mins from Salzburg Airport
High, snow-sure, and seriously well-connected, Obertauern sits at 1,740m with lifts reaching over 2,300m. It offers 100km of pistes in a convenient, circular layout that lets you ski the whole area without ever taking the same lift twice. The slopes are varied, with plenty of wide blues and reds, making it ideal for beginners and intermediates. There’s also enough steeper terrain and off-piste options to keep advanced skiers entertained.
You can ski right through the town, and most accommodation is ski-in ski-out. There’s a well-equipped snow park with kickers, rails, and beginner-friendly features, plus a fun cross park for casual freestylers.
Obertauern is also known for its lively après-ski scene, making it a great option for groups and young-at-heart skiers looking to balance solid snow with a good time.
Bad Hofgastein - 1 hour 15 mins from Salzburg Airport
Part of the Gastein Valley ski area within Ski Amadé, Bad Hofgastein shares 200km of pistes with neighbouring Bad Gastein and Dorfgastein. The ski area is varied and scenic, with long, wide runs and sweeping valley views. It’s ideal for intermediates and confident beginners, with a few steeper reds and blacks for advanced skiers too.
There’s a small snow park (Snowpark Gastein) located near Stubnerkogel, offering jumps, rails, and beginner-friendly freestyle features.
Off the slopes, Bad Hofgastein has a relaxed, spa-town feel – perfect if you’re after some post-ski downtime. The Alpentherme spa is a major draw, with thermal pools and mountain views.
Zell am See - 1 hour 15 mins from Salzburg Airport
Zell am See combines lakeside charm with reliable skiing on the Schmittenhöhe mountain, offering 77km of pistes locally. But it’s also part of the Zell am See–Kaprun ski area, which includes the glacier at Kitzsteinhorn, expanding the total to 138km of pistes – and snow-sure skiing throughout the season. The terrain suits beginners and intermediates especially well, with gentle slopes, long reds, and a handful of tougher runs for advanced skiers, including a challenging black run down the front face of the Schmittenhöhe. The views over Lake Zell are pretty spectacular too.
There’s a snow park on the glacier at Kitzsteinhorn, with features for all levels, plus a smaller fun slope on the Schmittenhöhe itself.
Zell am See is great for families, mixed-ability groups, and anyone looking for a ski trip with a side of old-town charm and après-ski by the lake.
Kitzbuhel - 1 hour 15 mins from Salzburg Airport
A blend of medieval charm and world-class skiing, Kitzbühel is one of Austria’s most iconic resorts. The ski area spans 233km of pistes, stretching across several peaks and valleys, with plenty of variety to suit all levels – from wide blues to challenging reds and blacks. It’s best known for the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill – one of the most famous (and intimidating) World Cup racecourses in the world. Despite its racing pedigree, the terrain is ideal for intermediates, with long, scenic runs and fast lift links across the area. There are also great beginner zones and some excellent off-piste when conditions allow, giving advanced skiers plenty to explore.
Kitzbühel has a small snow park (KitzSki Snowpark Hanglalm) with lines for various ability levels, and a fun slope for casual freestylers.
Off the mountain, Kitzbuhel is polished but authentic – cobbled streets, luxury hotels, and a lively après-ski and dining scene make it just as appealing off the slopes as on them.
Kaprun - 1 hour 20 mins from Salzburg Airport
Kaprun is home to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, one of Austria’s most snow-sure ski areas, with slopes reaching up to 3,029m. The glacier offers reliable skiing from autumn through to early summer, with 61km of pistes across mostly blue and red runs – perfect for beginners and intermediates, with a few steeper sections to test advanced skiers.
While the local Maiskogel area is best suited to learners and families, the main event is up on the glacier – easily reached by the modern 3K K-onnection lift from the village.
Kaprun also boasts a top-notch snow park on the glacier, with separate areas for pros, intermediates, and beginners. It’s one of Austria’s best-known freestyle spots.
The village itself is low-key but charming, with traditional Austrian vibes, and it works well for families, early/late-season skiers, and those who like one or two bustling apres ski bars after big ski days.
