Where Is The Snow? 26th Feb 2020

The weather at home has certainly been wearing us all down this year. There are only so many days of torrential rain and gale force wind you can take before you start to feel like you need a break from it all. That’s why I’m already counting down to my next ski break at the start of April, where I’m staying in l’hevana in Meribel (aka the best resort ever) with some friends of mine.

How's Europe looking?

Snow conditions are unbelievable right now. That’s really the bottom line of this week’s snow report. There’s been an absolutely epic amount of late season coverage, which should see us nicely through to the end of April in most resorts.

If you’re looking for late season skiing we’d recommend Val Thorens, Kaprun, Mayrhofen, Obergurgl, St Anton, Val d’Isere and Tignes for snow surety. Their high altitudes will help to keep snow fresh and powdery, and after this week’s deluge you won’t be short of snow here.

In terms of current conditions, France is coming up trumps, with over 100cm of snow forecast in some resorts (hello Les Arcs) and well over 70cm forecast all round. That’s not to say that Austria and Switzerland aren’t worth shouting about at the moment, with 68cm due in St Anton and 70cm in Engelberg - all in the next 6 days.

Snow due in the next 6 days:

  1. Chamonix - 98cm
  2. Les Arcs - 117cm
  3. La Clusaz - 82cm
  4. Avoriaz - 71cm
  5. St Anton - 68cm
  6. Engelberg - 70cm
  7. Grindelwald - 62cm
  8. Wengen - 59cm
  9. Courmayeur - 93cm
  10. Obergurgl - 24cm

In summary:

The snow is falling thick and fast all over the shop. Basically, wherever you choose for a late season ski break is going to be a good shout at this point. This week in particular though, take note of Les Arcs, Chamonix, and La Clusaz and the biggest winners in the end of February powder lottery.
